Who I am


My name is Pedro Pereira and I am a Starting Strength Coach.

My purpose, from creating Barbell Club, is to provide you with competent, actual strength coaching, to ensure you get as strong as possible in the most effective, efficient, fastest, and safest way.

It is my goal to improve the lives of as many people as possible doing what I do best. Join our community and contact me to get started.

I was born and raised in Portugal, lived in the suburbs of Lisbon until I was 24, left my country at that age and have spent 12 years abroad, coaching people both privately and in group settings, from all age groups and backgrounds, in Europe and in Asia.

I worked out in commercial gyms, doing your typical machine workout with average results since I was young, until I came across the Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training book. After many years of spinning my wheels, what followed after starting to follow the Starting Strength method was an increase in size and strength I had always thought to be out of my reach.

My decision to work towards getting certified as a Started Strength Coach came shortly after getting in touch with the material, and I went on to do it, to become the first one in Portugal.

I have since then returned to my country and founded the Barbell Club, to welcome anyone who wants to become stronger and live a better life. Join the club today in-person or online to immediately improve yours.

Why Strength Training


Our ability to produce force is the most influencing factor in the quality of our lives, as they revolve mostly around our physical interactions with our environments.

Strength is also the skill of the human body that mostly translates to all other skills (balance, coordination, accuracy, mobility, speed, agility...).

Because of this, getting stronger is not the only way, but is most certainly the most efficient and effective way anyone has to improve their ability to enjoy life, and also to lengthen it – you will live a much better, independent life for much longer (maybe even a decade) into your late years if you have accumulated a significant amount of strength by that time.

The Starting Strength Method


Starting Strength system is the most effective method in existence to develop strength, using barbell exercises, created by Mark Rippetoe.

Mark Rippetoe is an American strength training coach and author, with over forty years of experience as a strength coach, and ten years as a competitive powerlifter.

In order to drive the adaptations required for improved strength, the Starting Strength System uses movements which are natural to the human body and recruit all of its muscle mass, and loads them gradually with the use of a barbell. Starting Strength is a training protocol, a long-term procedure intended to develop actual strength and the adaptations that come with it, over time.

The high degree of competence in terms of coaching and programming that it takes to be certified as a Starting Strength Coach is the reason why the certification is known as the most regarded, and by far hardest-to-get certification in the industry. Despite the method being worldwide known in the fitness industry, the amount of work and experience it takes to get certified by the method currently keeps the total number of SSC’s in the world at only around 140.

Pedro followed my first 6 months with Starting Strength (my intro to strength training in general, at 41). By turns motivating, funny, and detail-oriented, Pedro kept my novice gains beautifully on track as my numbers slowly, steadily went up with each visit.

Sessions with Pedro were truly enjoyable on a social level — we do miss him in the gym — and training-wise, he knows how to push when needed. He never really let me slack, nor did he ever charge ahead blindly. He paid serious attention, heroically listening to my garrulous gym banter, puzzling through my incomprehensible notebook, and figuring out how to make my sessions physically rewarding without losing the fun. Rather than hear my own internal voice telling me I’m not squatting low enough, I hear Pedro’s. This is fine, actually. No, it’s fine.

Technically, his observations on my form and his ability to get me to focus on one or two things to improve were a huge help. I tend towards wanting to know all 17 things I’ve done wrong, so I can try in vain to keep them all in my head and then immediately jettison all of them the second I start my next rep, and Pedro picked up on this pretty quickly and kept me nicely on track, doling out advice and information without overloading me. “Improving my form” shifted from a confusing mess into something I actually looked forward to at the gym. Huge credit to him (and Steve Ross, who he trained under) for that.

Pedro was a big part of why I still go to the gym and still really enjoy it. His coaching prowess and warm, funny personality get a really strong, whole-hearted recommendation from me. Oh and he let me put on my own Spotify playlists in the gym, and pretended to like them, so, right, five stars for that alone. But also all the other stuff. A great coach.

I have had the pleasure of being coached by Pedro for almost a year.

Pedro has all the qualities I look for in a coach – he has excellent technical skills; he is a great motivator; and he knows how to adapt his communication to the different needs of his clients and thereby guide you towards better results.

I cannot recommend Pedro enough – with him as your coach your journey towards better strength is just better.

I (m47) trained with Pedro for a year, following the NLP. I made incredible gains, adding 200-300% to all the main lifts. Nice added benefit: according to my family I look “buff” 😀

To maximise gains and avoid injuries, it is crucial to carry out the lifts very precisely. Pedro has a great eye for detail, will explain you the basics, then continue to correct little issues throughout your progress (stance, wrist and elbow position, bracing, …). He makes adjustments to the programme as needed, you will never get “stuck” and he will find a way to make the best of that off day as well.

Besides that, he is the nicest guy, full of stories. Looking forward to visiting him in Portugal.
